Grandmother raising her granddaughter in poverty
I have been raising my 12-year-old granddaughter since she was 5 years old. Last year I had to go on CPP disability. I won't be able to return to work, as my disability is prolonged. I will be 65 in a year and a half. I currently receive the children's benefit of $241.02 for my granddaughter on top of my CPP disability payment. When I reach 65 I will no longer receive this benefit for my granddaughter and I will still be disabled. I barely get by on the CPP disability and will earn even less when I reach 65 years old. I am frightened that I will no longer be able to support and care for my granddaughter on the income from my CPP and Old Age Security. I do not want my granddaughter to have to go into foster care. That would be devastating to her, as she has had to face so much adversity in her short life. I live in Vancouver and the cost of living here is so high. With the Liberals in power for 16 years in BC my wages were frozen as I worked in healthcare. The cost of living has gone up drastically during this time. The organization for Grandparents raising grandchildren has brought the children's benefit to our governments attention. This benefit is the child's benefit and they lose this when a disabled grandparent reaches 65. My only source of income will be CPP and Old Age Security. This will further our descent into poverty. It is m hope that our current government will keep this benefit for children being raised by grandparents.
