A Senior by any other name is a Person

During the height of the COVID pandemic when advertising as to who was eligible for a vaccination etc. I was working with the MoH giving input as to wording. I'm a long time Patient Partner and have a marketing background so had the opportunity to contribute. The initial draft wording of print and on-line material revealed that the word 'Senior' was applied liberally when describing the upper age groups. Similar descriptors were not applied to other age groups eg 'Middle-agers' Instead the wording referred simply to age groups. I suggested, most emphatically, that if a descriptor is used for one age group then a descriptor should be used to describe all age groupings; or, simply put the age group "60 and over, 30 and over ... etc."; or, use the word 'people' Why tag those in a certain age group with a descriptor and not any of the other age groups? Ads were for general consumption so everyone would likely have a different idea of what age a person becomes a 'Senior' and so it left information unclear. This tendency to tag anyone in the older age group as Senior is very prevalent and through my work with the health care system I always refer to this inequity. Perhaps slowly, things will change so seniors can become people again.
