Verbal abuse in a public place
My aunt (83) suffered verbal abuse in a very public place, Costco on the South Shore of Montreal from her daughter in law. She was shouted at, people stopped to listen but no one helped, she was treated as an idiot, a child. She was traumatized by the incident which happened a few days before Christmas 2021. They, the son and daughter in law, proceeded to ignore her for Christmas and she spent her first Christmas alone in her apartment. Being a Community Health Care worker in Ontario, when I was made aware of this by my aunt, I knew it was abuse. I immediately called the Senior Abuse Help Line in Quebec to report the incident. After my aunt gave them permission, they did get in touch with her and try to assist her with the situation. To this day their relationship has not recovered from this incident. She still lives i isolation in her apartment, her son visits her weekly, alone. She is no longer welcomed in their home and misses out on so much in life, social gatherings, pool, pets, social interaction. It is a disgrace that this person could act in such a way to impact another person's life. My aunt was suicidal. Their is no happy ending in sight.
