Guaranteeing Lines of Credit for Small Charities

CAIF (Canadian Alternative Investment Foundation) is a registered charity established with the express purpose of providing low cost flexible loans to registered charities.  Although the foundation is only 5 years old it has assets of $3M and builds on CAIC’s (Canadian Alternative Investment Cooperative’s) three decades of experience as a social lender. We recognize that it takes more than capital to strengthen the charitable sector. There is also a need for expertise and capacity building to ensure that capital is used for the maximum benefit of the borrower.

CAIF is launching the Investing In our Community Partners Program.  The mandate of this program is to provide guarantees (up to $50,000)that will allow registered charitable organizations, whose mission is to support marginalized people or communities, access to working lines of credit. 

This program is available for organizations with limited access to convectional credit that may be:

• Be expanding (either growth in basic operations or taking on new programs) who are experiencing cash flow crunch as they “gear up”
• Be emerging and innovative
• Have a limited credit history
• Rely heavily on donations and grants
• Experience time lags in receiving funding
• Have uneven revenue patterns through the operating cycle

We support organizations that are respected in the community for being well managed and admired for their results; organizations that operate “close to the bone” and find themselves in tight cashflow situations from time to time.
